Should the Standard School Day Be Extended to 6 p.m.? [POLL]

We want to know what you think of a proposal that, if passed, would extend school hours for kids and keep them in school year-round.

Sen. Kamala Harris, a democrat from California recently proposed a bill that was also sponsored by New York Senator Kirsten Gillibrand.

If passed the standard school say would be extended to run from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

What's the reason for this? The goal of the bill, Sen. Harris explains, is to ease the burden on working parents, who currently must find ways to find childcare for their kids in the afterschool hours until they are done with work, as well as during the summer.

Kids would be getting out of school closer to when the standard work day ends, and would create activities for students to keep them at schools until then.

The immediate reaction for me is how this all will be funded. The bill does address that, which you can read more about by clicking here.

The bill also does state that teachers would not be required to work additional hours, but would be fairly compensated for any additional time worked.

I'm personally on the fence about this. My wife and myself are expecting a child, so providing childcare is definitely on our minds, especially since the both of us are working during the day.

However, ten hours seems like a long time for kids to be at school. I'm sure the extended day wouldn't be all learning -- it would likely include some kind of play or extra-curricular interests -- but that still seems like a lot for kids.

Then you also have to consider that, even with grant funding, many school districts across the country are facing funding and personnel issues. This seems like it could just compound the problem.

Personally I feel a better solution is for employers start looking at different ways to adjust their employees' work days -- such as perhaps a four-day work week or being more leniant on working remotely.
