Greater Binghamton Sports Complex Collapses During Rebuilding
Eleven months after a massive air-supported Broome County sports dome fell under heavy snow, its replacement collapsed as construction neared completion.
The structure that was to be the new home for the Greater Binghamton Sports Complex fell late Sunday afternoon. Authorities said no injuries were reported.
Broome County emergency services received the initial report of the collapse at 4:48 p.m. in a call from a person who lives near the site. An official said "fortunately it was unoccupied."
Choconut Center firefighters were assisted by units from East Maine. The new facility was being built between Airport and Dimmock Hill roads, just north of Middle Stella Ireland Road.
Choconut Center assistant fire chief Tyler Kolb was assessing the situation with other emergency responders.
Broome County emergency services director Patrick Dewing also was at the scene, along with sheriff's deputies and NYSEG workers.
The incident followed the December 16 collapse of the air-supported dome during a storm that dumped more than 40 inches of snow on the region.
The new facility was being built with steel supports instead of using the inflatable dome concept. The owners last summer indicated they hoped construction could be completed in January.
