Some food historians claim that the origins of shakshuka lie in Yemen while others claim that it was actually the Ottoman Empire that created what has become known as a breakfast staple in the Middle East.

No matter its true origins, one thing is for certain and that is that shakshuka is a much-loved dish served in homes all over the Middle East.

The word "shakshuka" is generally pronounced 'shack-shoe-kah' and basically translates to "all mixed up" which is appropriate because the dish really is all mixed up, but the flavors come together wonderfully.

Made from healthy ingredients, this dish is a breeze to prepare, packed with flavor, and is vegetarian although you can add meat to bulk it up if you'd like. Don't let the list of spices scare you if you're not a fan of heat packed dishes. Shakshuka packs loads of flavor but not a spicy hot taste that many are turned off by.
