The Firefighter’s Association of the State of New York has holiday safety advice available ranging from selecting trees, choosing decorations and lighting, use of candles and safety while cooking.

The Firefighters’ Association says home fires started with Christmas Trees caused an average of 6 deaths, 16 injuries and $14.8 million in damage between 2011 and 2015. Officials say home cooking equipment fires were 55% higher on Christmas Eve and 68% higher on Christmas Day.
