A man who quit an accounting job a few decades ago to open a frozen custard shop in Endicott has decided to retire.

Fred Corl of Vestal says he plans to shut down The Custard Corner on Vestal Avenue at the end of the month. The business, which originally was on North Nanticoke Avenue, opened in 1983.

The shop  just east of Jennie F. Snapp Middle School is open from noon to 9 p.m. seven days a week. Corl says he's devoted a lot of time to the business and he's looking forward to being able to relax a bit.

Corl recently posted signs announcing his decision "with great sadness." In an interview for WNBF Radio's Binghamton Now program, he expressed his appreciation for the support he's received from the shop's customers.

The Custard Corner operated at its first location for 15 years. It's been at two sites on Vestal Avenue since 1998.

Corl says he'll close the shop on September 30. He is hoping someone may buy the business to continue the tradition of serving what he proudly describes as "the finest frozen custard in the Southern Tier."
