Demolition of Fire-Damaged Rec Park Playground Underway
A Vestal company has started to tear down what's left of the OurSpace playground area at Recreation Park on Binghamton's West Side.
Most of the specially-designed facility was destroyed by an arson fire during the early-morning hours of June 1.
The blaze occurred four years after the $750,000 fully-accessible playground was opened.
According to Mayor Richard David, cleanup of the playground area began Thursday morning.
The mayor said LCP Group has donated its services to remove the debris from the park and haul it away at no charge.
Binghamton police detectives are continuing to investigate the arson case. Captain Cory Minor said all leads are being followed up. He would not comment on whether investigators have identified any suspects in connection with the fire.
Minor said people with information about the incident may contact the detective bureau at (607) 772-7080.
