Damage Assessments from May 15th Storms Continue
The National Weather Service is confirming a tornado with winds of 85 to 100 miles per hour was spawned by a line of strong storms in Wayne County Pennsylvania, West of Honesdale and east of Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania late in the afternoon May 15. NOAA was still investigating reports of possible tornadoes in New York State.
Meanwhile, 18 New York State Electric and Gas customers in Delaware County were still without power overnight May 16. NYSEG’s website projected electricity back on by 11:45 p.m. May 17. Some parts of Westchester and Sullivan Counties, where tens of thousands of residents were reported without power two days after the storm, were finding on the NYSEG outage site that they may not have service restored until 7 p.m. May 19.
New York Governor Andrew Cuomo said two people in the Hudson Valley were killed by falling trees during the storm.
An 11 year old girl was killed at her home in Newburgh in Orange County when a tree fell on the car she was in and a woman died after a tree fell on her car while she was driving.
Governor Cuomo said May 16 that there might be federal assistance available depending on the extent of storm damage to individual communities.
