Construction on Binghamton University R&D Project About to Begin
Groundbreaking is expected in the next few weeks on a $15 million Binghamton University research and development facility in Johnson City.
University president Harvey Stenger said bids were opened recently and contracts are in the process of being signed for the building that will be constructed on Corliss Avenue.
Speaking on WNBF Radio's Binghamton Now program Friday, Stenger said the project "will start right away." He said ground should be broken within the next month.
The complex will be built in the space between buildings housing the Decker College of Nursing and the School of Pharmacy.
Based on the current schedule, work on the facility should be completed by the end of next year.
Stenger described the building will be "a modest facility" but it will allow the university to "start doing some relationship building with companies" involved with pharmaceutical development.
The ultimate goal is to attract businesses to occupy a former Ozalid Corporation building on Park Street, on the eastern end of the university's 15-acre health sciences campus.
