Operations are winding down at an independent bookstore in downtown Binghamton.

RiverRead Books on Court Street is scheduled to close forever at 6 p.m. Tuesday, January 31st.

Speaking on WNBF Radio's Binghamton Now program, co-owner Connie Barnes said there simply was not enough business to continue operations.

Barnes said the past few weeks have been "very traumatic" as long-time customers have visited the business to recount fond memories of the bookstore. She said, "we did have a great time for almost nine years."

A group of loyal RiverRead supporters gathered inside the bookstore to enjoy some music, food, and wine at a reception Thursday evening. Although the occasion was somewhat somber, it served as an opportunity for people to reflect on the impact the business had on the community.

Barnes said the partners who launched the business in 2008 had hoped more people would utilize the riverwalk which runs next to the store. But the anticipated increased foot traffic never materialized.

Now, many of RiverRead's shelves are empty as customers have taken advantage of the going-out-of-business sale in recent weeks.

Barnes said it has been "very, very difficult" to prepare for the store's closing. After RiverRead Books is history, she plans to remain active in the community.
