You get a simple mosquito bite and you probably don't think much about it. But the CDC is warning people of a rare virus that is carried through mosquitoes.

On Friday, a sixth person in the United Stated died of the virus knows as Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE). The cases have been documented in Massachusetts, Michigan and Rhode Island, according to WKBW.

The CDC has marked 2019 as the deadliest year for the virus in more than a decade. Nearly all of the cases of EEE the past decade have been on the east coast.

“We continue to emphasize the need for people to protect themselves from mosquito bites,” said Massachusetts Public Health Commissioner Monica Bharel, MD, MPH. “The unusually warm weather expected this weekend will increase outdoor activity among people and mosquitoes. It is absolutely essential that people take steps to avoid being bitten by a mosquito.”

The CDC says one third of confirmed cases are fatal. People that have survived the virus usually suffer from severe neurological damage.

Using repellent, wearing long sleeve shirts and pants are ways to prevent mosquito bites.
