Cash from Broome Drug Dealers to Be Used by Police

A treatment program and several police agencies will receive money seized from convicted drug dealers in Broome County.

According to a news release from District Attorney Stephen Cornwell, about $281,000 is being distributed to ten organizations.

The New York State Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse will receive the largest single amount - about $70,000 - under the distribution announced Thursday.

The Broome County Special Investigations Unit Task Force, which makes many of the drug-related arrests in the Binghamton area, will receive $67,000. The District Attorney's Office will receive about $59,000.

Binghamton, Endicott, Johnson City and Vestal police departments also will share in the drug sales proceeds. Money also is being allocated to the Broome County Sheriff's Office, the New York State Police and the Binghamton University Police.

Although some agencies have already decided how to use the money, some police chiefs have yet to determine what they'll do with the cash.
