The recipients of the $190,000 in grants were approved in December by the Broome County Legislature.

The funding is coming from the New York State Office of Children and Family Services.

Some programs provide emotional support like the Compeer Youth Mentoring program of the Mental Health Association of the Southern Tier, Catholic Charities of Broome County’s Connections Center and Safe Harbour from the Crime Victims Assistance Center that also provides personal care items, financial and legal support for young people with a history of traumatic situations.  Other programs are recreational or educational like playground and summer fun programs,  a 6-week program at the Town of Vestal Library and a special hockey festival offering an accessible and integrative athletic opportunity for children with or without disabilities while programs from Catholic Charities of Broome County offer help for homeless or runaway youth and Family Planning of South Central New York and Broome Community College offer character-building opportunities with the Teens Count Program and Young Women of Color Leadership Project.

In all, 19 programs in Broome County are being funded through the grant.
