Broome State of Emergency: 10 Fentanyl Deaths in March

Broome County Executive Jason Garnar has declared a State of Emergency after a wave of overdose deaths linked to fentanyl.

Garnar issued the declaration Wednesday afternoon. He said there have been 10 drug-related deaths in the county so far this month. Six overdose fatalities have been reported in the last 10 days.

Garnar said Broome County is "facing a deadly fentanyl emergency." He said "this is plaguing our community and we have to do everything we can to keep our residents safe."

Broome County District Attorney Stephen Cornwell said "we are in the middle of a deadly fentanyl emergency."

The emergency declaration was issued as part of an effort to obtain more resources to deal with the problem and to communicate warnings to county residents.

Binghamton police have said the deaths of a man and woman whose bodies were found Sunday in an apartment at the downtown Woodburn Court II complex may have been drug-related.
