The Broome County Health Department is one of four counties in New York State given money to help build health department capacity for opioid overdose prevention.

The project will help local department strengthen community ties to prevent overdoses and includes working with providers on opioid prescribing practices, reducing barriers to medication assisted treatment, strengthening referral mechanisms with emergency rooms, law enforcement, courts and other agencies and reducing the stigma associated with substance use disorders.

The Broome County Health Department is working with New York State Opioid Overdose Prevention Program staff.

Local officials say a new media campaign from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is being launched that looks to educate people about the dangers of prescription opioid abuse.
