"Brazen" Thief Cuts Catalytic Converter Off Car at Broome Store

A Broome County man has been accused of stealing a catalytic converter in the middle of the day from a vehicle parked at a busy town of Chenango business.

Authorities said 38-year-old Adam Mittl of the town of Maine was arrested Monday after a traffic stop on West Wendell Street in Endicott.

Detective sergeant John Harder of the Broome County Sheriff's Office said the expensive car component was cut off a Honda Element just before noon April 20. He described the crime as "very brazen."

Investigators obtained a search warrant and confiscated cutting tools from Mittl's vehicle as evidence.

Mittl was charged with felony counts of grand larceny and criminal mischief. He also was charged with possession of burglary tools and criminal possession of a controlled substance.

Mittl was processed and released to Vestal police on an outstanding warrant.
