Sean Massey and Loren Couch, the owners of Tranquil Bar and Bistro, say the business will shut down on April 2.

The restaurant noted for its French-American cuisine is located at the corner of Pine and Fayette streets. It opened on New Year's Day in 2008.

In a message to patrons, the owners said the restaurant may have been "doomed by the increasing economic success" of Binghamton. They said there was little competition when the place opened but that "changed significantly in the last few years."

Massey and Couch said the move to close the restaurant was a "difficult decision." They expressed appreciation to the employees who have worked for Tranquil.

The owners said the are looking forward to being part of Binghamton Restaurant Week for one final time. The "week" featuring many of the city's restaurants will run ten days from March 21 to 30.

In the message announcing the closing, Massey and Couch said the new owner of the place at 36 Pine Street - described as a friend and former bartender - has "some exciting plans" which will be announced at some point in the future.
