After living without a grocery store close by for nearly 25 years, Binghamton's Northside was treated to the newly opened Greater Good Grocery store in early January of this year.

From the very beginning, as far back as when the idea for the store was in its infancy, the mission of Greater Good Grocery was and remains simple: to make food accessible and affordable for everyone in the Greater Binghamton community.

Earlier this week, a social media post went viral in our community and contained some misinformation and Greater Good Grocery wants to clear up any confusion regarding the store as a result of the post.

The post claimed that all food items sold in the store were donated and that all proceeds of food sold is given solely to CHOW, the Community Hunger Outreach Warehouse. In reality, the food sold at Greater Good Grocery is not donated. The food sold in the grocery store is sourced and bought from wholesalers and a variety of food partners located all throughout New York State.

While it may be true that many avoid shopping at Greater Good Grocery because they believe it to be a store only for those in our community who are food insecure, that's not the case. While an attempt is made to keep prices reasonable so that those struggling can afford food, anyone who lives, works, or visits our community is welcome to shop at the store. As a matter of fact, the more people who shop at the grocery store, the more income will be generated and the more people will be helped.

Speaking of helping people, all profit that Greater Good Grocery brings in through the sale of items in the store are turned right around and put back into the Binghamton community through the various programs that are part of the Broome County Council of Churches. Some of those programs include CHOW and Faith in Action Volunteers.

Located at 435 State Street in Binghamton, the Greater Good Grocery store accept cash, credit, debit, and EBT and is open from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m on Saturday. The store is closed on Sunday.

Greater Good Grocery accepts cash, credit, debit, SNAP, and FVRx coupons.
