Some Southern Tier residents are in Florida to help as Hurricane Matthew closes in on the southeast coast.

Qifan Yang of Vestal and Jeanne Frey of  Binghamton have been deployed by the Southern Tier Chapter of the American Red Cross.

Yang is working in shelter operations while Frey is working in Health Service.

The Red Cross in Florida was prepared to support and open as many as 100 evacuation shelters and has over two dozen emergency response vehicles on stand-by.

More than 500 disaster workers and 90 response vehicles are staged in Florida, Georgia, North Carolina and South Carolina.
