Two men were arrested following a violent struggle with police in Binghamton.

Authorities say 24-year-old Nixon Garcias of the Bronx and 34-year-old Christopher Pierre of Binghamton were taken into custody on Murray Street north of Clinton Street.

The men were in a car pulled over early Wednesday afternoon after a report of possible drug activity involving the occupants.

According to police, officers "detected an odor of marijuana coming from inside of the vehicle" and asked the men to get out of the car.

Garcias allegedly fought with officers when they tried to search him for weapons. Police say he then struck an officer in the face and bit another several times.

Two other officers sustained injuries when attempting to subdue Garcias. He was arrested on a parole warrant. He also was charged with assault, resisting arrest and obstruction of governmental administration.

Several police vehicles raced to the scene when officers requested assistance as a crowd started to gather.

Inmate records show Garcias was released from prison in January after serving time for robbery and criminal sexual act.

Pierre, who had been driving the car, was charged with obstruction of governmental administration. He also was cited for vehicle and traffic law violations.
