Binghamton Man Charged with Attempted Murder, Assault

Police say a Binghamton resident faces a half-dozen felony counts after he allegedly intentionally struck a vehicle on a highway and slashed a passenger with a knife.

Authorities say 33-year-old Tyron Hooks-Harris of Jackson Street was arrested following Saturday morning's incident on the New York State Thruway in Madison County.

According to New York State Police, a trooper tried to stop a car driven by Hooks-Harris. Police agencies had been looking for the vehicle because the operator had been described as "potentially suicidal."

Investigators say Hooks-Harris was pursued when he would not pull over. Troopers observed the car swerve into the path of a sport utility vehicle. Both vehicles went off the highway after they collided.

Hooks-Harris then is said to have left his car and opened a rear door on the SUV. He allegedly slashed a passenger.

Troopers took Hooks-Harris into custody without incident.

In addition to attempte murder, Hooks-Harris was charged with assault, reckless endangerment and criminal mischief. He also faces counts of driving while his ability was impaired by drugs and fleeing a police officer.

Hooks-Harris was arraigned and sent to Madison County jail without bail.

Police say the occupants of the SUV were treated at a hospital and released.
