Binghamton High’s Thanksgiving Dinners Served as Take Out Only This Year
This year marks the 25th consecutive year that the Binghamton High School seniors will host a free Thanksgiving Day dinner for people in the Binghamton area. The meal is cooked by seniors and staff at the high school every year.
Every year for the past twenty-four years, hundreds of people from Broome County would spend part of their Thanksgiving Day enjoying a free Thanksgiving dinner with all the trimmings at Binghamton High School. The meal gives members of our community a chance to sit down and relax while enjoying a nice hot meal and conversation with other Broome County residents. But due to Covid-19, they are shifting gears and serving the meals as take out only this year.
According to WICZ, anyone can pick up meals between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. Thanksgiving Day, next Thursday, at the high school on Main Street in Binghamton. Participants can either walk up to the school's Oak Street entrance, or they will have a drive-thru set up near the loading docks. According to the report, you can also take a shuttle bus to the event from the Saratoga Apartments, the former Weis on Main Street in Binghamton, Town and Country Apartments, or the Carlisle Apartments.
This annual event allows people in need to have a traditional Thanksgiving dinner, but the dinner is available to anyone who wants it.
I know a couple of young adults that graduated from Binghamton High School, and both of them helped to cook the annual Thanksgiving feast during their senior year. They both said it was a rewarding experience especially knowing that a lot of the people that attended would the dinner would not be able to afford a Thanksgiving meal on their own, and some would have no one else to share the meal with if it wasn't for the event.
