Binghamton Gets New York Gun Violence Reduction Funds
New York State is hoping job training will help curb gun violence in places like Binghamton.
New York Governor Andrew Cuomo has announced the Parlor City will be getting $750,000 to fund workforce training and job placement programs for young workers.
20 cities are sharing $16-million in the funding that was announced July 21. Previously, the governor announced $12-million would be directed to New York City.
The top awards in the latest round are going to Buffalo at $2,650,000, Rochester at $2,250,000, Yonkers at $1.1 million and Mount Vernon at $1,050,000.
Binghamton and Syracuse are each being awarded $750,000.
A news release from the Governor’s office says the New York State Department of Labor will partner with local workforce development boards and community partners to provide job training and career placement services to at-risk youth.
Officials say they hope to connect young people age 18 to 24 who are out of school with good-paying permanent jobs.
In all, New York State is spending $154.7 million in efforts to reduce gun violence.
