The building that had housed a Tioga County Perkins Restaurant and Bakery for about four years is about to be sold.

The business located next door to a Comfort Inn on Route 434 in Apalachin closed suddenly in late October.

The Perkins name was commonplace in the Binghamton area for many years. But because the brand had been missing from the region for decades, past customers were looking forward to the opening of the new restaurant in July 2017.

The place was busy at first, operating around-the-clock seven days a week. But business began dropping off. The restaurant's sales were hit hard due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

A person familiar with the situation said the Perkins location eventually was shut down because of difficulties in hiring cooks and other employees.

Beth Ann Smith, who had opened the restaurant, could not be reached for comment on the decision to close.

A listing posted by CBRE indicates the 4,800-square-foot building used by the business will be go up for auction on April 25 with a starting bid of $200,000.

According to the listing, the kitchen and appliances cost $529,000 at the time of installation.

The Perkins restaurant was built next door to the popular Blue Dolphin Diner, which opened in 1989.
