3 Years Later: The Whitney Point Gators
Remember the Whitney Point alligators? At first, it was believed that there was only one. After it was caught, many thought that it wasn't the same one that was pictured online. It turned out that it was two alligators in the Tioughnioga River. So how long ago was it? 2 years, 5 years, 10 years.
It's hard to believe that it was 2017. Did you guess three years ago this week? I didn't either. It was believed that the alligators were somebody's pet at one time, they got too big and then they were released into the wild.
At the time, my daughter, Tara loved to kayak at the pond at her grandmother's house. She wanted to go on the river but changed her mind after hearing about the alligators. The first alligator was caught on Saturday, July 29th, 2017, and was re-homed at Animal Adventure in Harpursville.
The second alligator was caught on, Monday, August 7th, 2017. It was 15 pounds and 45 inches long and was also sent to Animal Adventure. The two alligators (Whitney and Lisle) are still thriving there today.
Six alligators call Animal Adventure home with five on display and one baby which is off exhibit at this time. What do you remember about the two Whitney Point alligators?
