Winter Weather Advisory Issued for Most of New York and Pennsylvania

In spite of the prediction on Groundhog Day Sunday of an early spring by Pennsylvania’s weather-woodchuck, Punxsutawney Phil, the National Weather Service in Binghamton is advising some winter weather could be in store for the Twin Tiers.

A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for most of New York and Pennsylvania including Central New York, the Finger Lakes to the Southern Tier and the entire Northern Tier of Pennsylvania from 8 p.m. February 5 until 10 Thursday morning.  Only Western New York, New York City and Long Island and the southern-most portions of Pennsylvania are out of the advisory area.

NOAA says motorists should plan on slippery road conditions, mainly for the Thursday morning commute.

Forecasters say the snow will develop during the evening February 5, which will transition to sleet and freezing rain into Thursday morning.

According to the National Weather Service, valleys may get warm enough for freezing rain to change to rain shortly after dawn Thursday, but it may take until late morning to get above freezing at higher elevations.
