News headlines have been filled for days with doomsayer puns about the rapidly spreading and unique strain of influenza that's threatening the U.S. this year.

Governor Cuomo declared a public health emergency on Saturday, giving pharmacists permission to administer the flu vaccination to more people, in an attempt to combat the epidemic. Yahoo News reports that 'there has been 19,128 cases of influenza this season, compared with 4,404 cases for the entire 2011-2012 season.'

"We are experiencing the worst flu season since at least 2009, and influenza activity in New York state is widespread, with cases reported in all 57 counties and all five boroughs of New York City,"

Cuomo said on Saturday (according to Yahoo News)

The greatest change in availability is for children 6 months old to 18 years old. Typically, that age range would be excluded from receiving the vaccination in New York. Now that Governor Cuomo has lifted that age restriction, it's strongly advised that entire families seek out the vaccine in an attempt to block the flu.
