Binghamton City Council now is back to full strength after lawmakers voted to fill a vacant seat.

Councilmembers have approved the appointment of Sophia Resciniti to represent the Second District, which covers much of the city's West Side.

Resciniti is director of field education for Binghamton University's Department of Social Work. She received her Master of Social Work and Bachelor of Science in human development degrees from Binghamton University.

The seat was vacated by Joseph Mihalko. He left council to become Broome County Clerk following his election to that job last November.

Resciniti, who lives with her family on Crestmont Road, said she is excited to have been selected to fill the seat.

Resciniti said she was born in Binghamton, although she spent her childhood in Greece.

Resciniti will serve on council for the rest of this year. A special election will be held in November for the final year in Mihalko's term. Although she hasn't made a decision about running in that election, Resciniti said she likely would do so.

Broome County Republican chairman Bijoy Datta said several people had expressed an interest in the council seat. He said Resciniti and two others were interviewed as part of a selection process.
