Walgreens Buys Most Binghamton-Area Rite Aid Stores

Most Rite Aid stores in Broome and Tioga counties are about to be converted to Walgreens outlets.

Rite Aid last year announced it would sell more than 1,900 stores to Walgreens.

The first phase of the transition that will affect customers in the Binghamton area is taking place this week.

Signs posted at the Rite Aid store in the Campus Plaza in Vestal indicate the pharmacy will close at 5 p.m. on Thursday for a "system update." The pharmacy is to reopen at 9 a.m. on Friday.

While pharmacies will be changed over to Walgreens, the front portion of the stores will continue to operate for an extended period under the name "Rite Aid."

It's expected to take at least a few months before the large signs outside the affected stores are changed.

Two Broome County Rite Aid stores will not be acquired by Walgreens. The operations at 201 Conklin Avenue in Binghamton and at 511 Hooper Road in Endwell will remain with Rite Aid.
