Village Board Not to Blame for Loss of J.C. Field Days
The Johnson City Celebration Committee says ‘don’t blame the Village Board’ for the decision to end the field days after more than 50 years.
A handful of village and non-village residents turned out to the board meeting April 16 to fight for continuation of the traditional Labor Day Weekend celebration.
The cancellation of the field days was not on the trustees’ agenda for the meeting but the community members who showed up told the board they have quickly been able to organize a few people who are willing to step up to try to save the tradition.
Former Mayor Harry Lewis says the decision to end the field days came from costs of putting on the event going up, loss of the fireworks sponsor and increased incidents of trouble on the part of some of those attending in the past few years. Lewis said the committee made the decision to end the field days and the Village Board was not involved.
