Victims of Binghamton Clothing Company Fire Remembered 108 Years Later
The victims and the heroes in the single-deadliest incident in Binghamton history are being remembered again.
July 22, 2021 marked 108 years since the Binghamton Clothing Company fire that destroyed a factory building on Wall Street in downtown Binghamton in less than 20 minutes, killing 31 people, most of them young immigrant women working in the factory.
A memorial stone is placed across the street from the site, bearing the names of those lost, including Nellie Conner and Sidney Dimmock who helped guide their co-workers to safety but never made it out alive themselves.
The monument also honors the efforts of the City’s fire department.
The massive fire and loss of life was instrumental in forever changing labor and safety laws and practices.
The cause of the fire has never been determined.
