Vestal Starbucks Store Employees Seeking Union Vote

More than a dozen people who work at a Vestal Starbucks shop have signed a letter supporting a vote to be represented by a union.

Alexandra Yeager and 13 other workers at the Starbucks location at 2540 Vestal Parkway East signed the message to company chief executive Howard Schultz.

Yeager, who helped to successfully organize an Albany Starbucks store, says she recently transferred to the shop in Vestal. She said most of the other people who work at the Parkway location support the unionization effort but chose to remain anonymous.

Yeager said the letter from the Vestal store "partners" was sent to the company late last week. She said there had been no response. She said "typically they don't respond."

According to the letter to Schultz: "Partners within our store have experienced being scheduled outside of their prospective availability, shift supervisors being forced to stay past their out times, and management not accepting availability request changes in a timely manner."

The message also indicated workers "experienced understaffing in addition to overstaffing where partners could barely move on the floor without touching each other."

The letter said the employees "want to be able to have our voices hear while working towards a healthy partnership with Starbucks."

A representative at Starbucks corporate headquarters could not be reached immediately for comment.

Another Starbucks store on the Vestal Parkway - at University Plaza - is closed for remodeling. Signs at the shop indicate it is scheduled to reopen July 18.

Other Starbucks shops in Broome County are located in the Target Store on the Vestal Parkway and on Front Street in the town of Dickinson.
