What had been reported as a possible dumpster fire at Vestal's University Plaza turned out to be a blaze that erupted in the back of a garbage truck.

Firefighters were sent to 4700 Vestal Parkway East around 6 a.m. Wednesday.

According to the fire department, a chief who arrived at the scene discovered the blaze involved a large pile of trash from a garbage truck.

Authorities said "a quick thinking garbage truck driver found an open, safe spot to dump the load he was carrying that was on fire, saving his equipment."

The fire was under control within 30 minutes. No injuries were reported.
