The announcement came just over three hours after police issued a news release indicating they were investigating Wetzel's disappearance.

The student was said to have last had contact with his family on Tuesday morning.

Detectives at the time did not indicate whether there were any suspicious circumstances in the case that prompted the request for the public's assistance in finding Wetzel.

Word of Wetzel's disappearance first circulated in a Facebook post that was made several hours before the police department issued its news release.
