Twin Tiers in the Ice Box

Cold temperatures continue to be a concern for much of the Twin Tiers through at least midday January 11 while a blast of lake effect snow has coated some roadways.   Blowing snow is also causing an issue for motorists in the region.

The National Weather Service in Binghamton has cautioned residents about potentially dangerous wind chills reaching as low as minus 25 that could cause frostbite in as little as 30 minutes.

The wind chill at 6 a.m January 11was measured in the Binghamton area at 16 degrees below zero with wind gusts of 23 miles per hour and the air temperature only at 2 above.

Anyone going outside should make sure all skin is covered with special attention to the head, nose, ears, fingers and toes.  Hypothermia is also a concern with the core body temperature dropping below 95 degrees. Without quick medical attention, hypothermia can be fatal.

With the cold temperatures expected overnight, warming stations like the Central Intermodal Transportation Terminal in Downtown Binghamton were available for people to get out of the elements.  Law enforcement officials could not say if anyone had taken advantage of the service.

Several area school districts opted to delay opening due to the cold weather.

Meanwhile, Cortland County was under a Winter Weather Advisory into the morning with a potential of several inches of lake effect snow.

A little dusting of snow throughout the region early this morning combined with the strong, gusty winds can also cause for some slick roads and reduced visibility this morning.
