Turbines Being Installed in Windsor and Sanford for Wind Farm

The first wind turbines have been put in place for a massive power generating project in eastern Broome County.

The Bluestone Wind Project will consist of 26 turbines in the towns of Windsor and Sanford.

The project received needed local and state approvals despite opposition from some people who live near the turbine sites. Tree clearing for the 112 megawatt wind farm began early last year.

The completed project will include 13 miles of access roads, 36 miles of high-voltage power lines and two meteorological towers. The wind farm will cover an area totaling 5,662 acres.

Northland Power of Canada will manage the wind project, which it purchased two years ago.

The wind farm will connect to existing New York State Electric and Gas transmission lines. The project is expected to generate enough energy to power 54,000 homes.

Northland Power executives are planning to join local and state officials for an event in Sanford Wednesday.

The Bluestone Wind Project is expected to start commercial operation by the end of this year.
