As we all face the reality of staying at home for what could be weeks (or maybe longer), many of us are looking for as much space in our freezers to preserve as much food as possible.

A freezer can be one of the best ways to keep foods from going bad, but experts say there are some things in your freezer that should be tossed out.

The website Eat This, Not That published "10 Signs It's Time to Toss Your Frozen Food."  Here are a few of the signs to look for:

  • Unrecognizable foods --- Eat This, Not That suggests that if you can't identify a food item in your freezer, it's probably best to get rid of it.  They also suggest that you label and date foods as soon as you place them in your freezer.
  • The color of the food has changed --- According to Eat This, Not That, a food that has changed color in the freezer usually signals that something "is off."
  • Any items that have thawed --- I'm sure we've all had this happen.  Your freezer is filled with food and then, the electricity goes out.  Eat This, Not That says that as much as it hurts to do it, if a frozen item has thawed, you really should toss it.
  • Any item that has past its expiration date --- Eat This, Not That says that even though an item is frozen, that doesn't mean you should ignore expiration dates.
