As some of you know, my daughter, Tara, is hosting a French Exchange student named Lucie. Next March, she is traveling to France to stay with Lucie and we need to get Tara a passport to leave the country.

Here's something I just found out, both parents need to be there to get sign her up for a passport. I've been told, it's because both parents have to be on board and to make sure that one parent isn't shipping their child out of the country without the knowledge of the other parent.

That makes sense to me but here's a potential problem for some parents. What if your schedules don't easily allow both parents to go when the office is open? Broome County has been hosting events as a convenience for those who can't make it to their downtown office during regular business hours.

The Broome County Clerk's Office is having a Passport Fair at the Windsor Central High School cafeteria (1191 NYS Route 79) this Friday, October 18th. It's open to the public from 5:30 p.m. until halftime of the football game.

Application forms will be available and photos can be taken on-site. You can also download a copy of the passport application here.

Here's what you should bring with you: 1) an original or a certified copy of your birth certificate with a raised seal and a photocopy (front and back) 2) photo ID and a photocopy (front and back) and 3) two checks to cover the fees.

Cash and credit cards will not be taken at the Passport Fair. Children under 18 need to have their parents present for a passport application. Expedited applications cannot be processed either.

The cost is $110 for adult applications and $80 for children under the age of 16. There's a $35 processing fee for each application and a $10 fee for passport photos. Go here for more info.
