Johnson City Police say they have gotten reports of a man posing as a water department employee trying to getting into an elderly resident’s home.

The man is white, in his 30s with a thin build and had noticeably missing teeth.

While the suspect was supposedly looking for leaks, he reportedly was on a cell phone contacting another person to get into the house to steal valuables.

Residents are reminded to always ask for official identification. Police say if you don’t know the person, don’t let them into your house and contact the police.

If someone claims they work for a utility company and want access without a prior appointment, you should send the person away and contact the company directly.

Johnson City utility workers drive municipal vehicles with official Johnson City markings or logos clearly displayed. Village utility workers are required to have pre-arranged appointments with residents.
