SUV Pulled from River Near Binghamton's Rockbottom Dam

A man apparently escaped injury after driving a sport utility vehicle in the Susquehanna River on Binghamton's South Side.

Authorities said the incident was reported around 6:45 a.m. Tuesday. City police and firefighters were sent to the river near the Park Diner on Conklin Avenue.

According to WIVT/binghamtonhomepage.com, a Toyota Highlander SUV wound up downstream from the Rockbottom Dam.

The station reported that a man who had been near the scene said the man operating the vehicle had been driving back-and-forth along the rocky riverbank. The man then appeared to try to drive across the relatively shallow river but the SUV became stuck in a deep spot.

WIVT reported the windshield wipers and headlights of the vehicle continued to operate even as police officers and firefighters arrived.

According to a city official, the driver got out of the SUV on his own. No injuries were reported.

A fire department boat was deployed into the river so a line could be attached to the vehicle to enable a towing service to pull it to shore.

Binghamton police were said to be questioning the man who had been operating the SUV. Police late Tuesday morning said they had no information to release on the investigation into the incident.
