Start of HS Winter Sports Pushed Back
There's been lots of tinkering with the high school sports schedule for high school sports. Expect that to keep changing, but for now, there is one more slight tweak to the schedule.
According to a press release from the New York State Public High School Athletic Association, the organization's COVID-19 task force voted to push back the start date of winter sports from November 16 to November 30.
Also in the meeting, officers voted to approve revising the amount of required practices for fall sport athletes, which will be 12 for football and ten for all other sports, and waiving the rule that prohibits athletes from playing/practicing seven consecutive days.
“As the fall sports season starts on September 21st, we felt it was most appropriate to delay the start of the winter sports season by two weeks to afford sections and schools additional time to play the fall sports seasons before the winter seasons began,” said Paul Harrica, NYSPHSAA President and Chair of the COVID-19 Task Force.
New York State is allowing low and moderate risk sports to practice and compete on September 21, while high risk sports will be able to hold practices, but not compete.
