Southern Tier Welcome Center Gets Upgrades
Motorists looking for a break from the road once they cross from Pennsylvania into New York State in Broome County are finding more amenities at the Welcome Center on Interstate 81 in Kirkwood.
State and local officials were on hand to unveil the re-vamped Southern Tier Welcome Center that includes foods that are produced in New York State.
That portion of the offerings at the center is being criticized by Congresswoman Claudia Tenney, who says federal law only allows the sale of food and beverages in vending machines at rest stops.
New York Governor Andrew Cuomo signed a measure that allows goods produced in New York State to be sold at rest areas in the state.
Cornell Cooperative Extension of Broome County is operating the Taste New York sales at the Welcome Center.
New York State Agricultural Commissioner Richard Ball says producers in the state can contact the state agriculture office if they wish to participate.
