Delaware County, New York Town Is Celebrating 250th Birthday
Anyone that knows me, knows that I love to get in my convertible, put the top down and go for a drive. There are several places I enjoy traveling to including the "dam" trip along the Cannonsville Reservoir between Deposit and Walton.
When I go that way, I sometimes continue along County Route 23 to Sidney and stop for a refreshment at Awestruck Ciders. Until recently, I didn't realize the rich history that Sidney has to offer but now I do.
The History Of Sidney New York
We first hear about Sidney in the early 1770s when Reverend William Johnston built his home near the area of the current Sidney Airport. The area was known as the Johnston Settlement or Sidney Plains.
The town of Sidney wasn't officially formed until 1801 when it split from the town of Franklin. On April 7th, the town was named in honor of British naval officer Sir Sidney Smith.
He was a hero in the American and French revolutionary wars but never actually visited Sidney. You can read the incredible story of Sidney New York here. On Friday, June 10th, and Saturday, June 11th, they will celebrate their 250th Anniversary Celebration.
Sidney New York 250th Anniversary Celebration
The Semiquincentennial 250th Anniversary Celebration begins Friday night, June 10th, and includes a Sidney Historical Society Cemetery Tour beginning at 6 p.m., limitless Performing Arts performances at Keith Clark Park at 6:30 p.m., and Fireworks at dusk.
On Saturday, June 11th, begin the day with a 250th-themed breakfast from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. There'll be a Veteran's of Sidney Recognition and Ceremony at Veteran's Memorial Park at 9 a.m.
There will also be a Main Street Walking Tour at 10 a.m. and the return of the 30th Annual Hometown Day Parade at 1 p.m. That are some of the activities that will be happening in Sdiay as they celebrate 250 years of greatness, see the full schedule of events here.
