The New York State Department of Transportation has announced construction on a $1.1 million project to enhance pedestrian safety along Route 434 between B.U. and Main Street in the Town of Vestal with the installation of sidewalks in eight locations on the Vestal Parkway where there currently are none.

The DOT says the new sidewalks will accommodate a large volume of people walking from residential neighborhoods along the Vestal Parkway, going to bus stops along Route 434 and accessing restaurants and shopping centers along the busy road.

Officials say work will not be happening during the 2019 summer concert series or on federal holidays that fall between May and November.

The work is expected to be finished in the fall.

Motorists on the Parkway should be aware of the construction and be prepared to slow down and move over for work crews.

The DOT says sidewalks and sidewalk connections will be built at the following locations:

  • At Main Street near Memorial Park
  • At Airborne Avenue
  • At African Road
  • At Sycamore Street/Rano Boulevard
  • In front of Town Square Mall
  • Between Jensen Road and the Target entrance
  • Between Martha Road and Bunn Hill Road
  • At Glenn G. Bartle Drive (Binghamton University entrance)
