Every time that I drive by the Clarks Summit exit 194 off of I-81, I always stop and get some donuts from Krispy Kreme. I also have a standing order with a few friends of mine that whenever they drive by, if they stop to get me donuts, I'll pay for their dozen donuts too.

Now I have another reason to get off the Clarks Summit exit. If you haven't heard, Sheetz is temporarily lowering the price of two types of their gas. Gasoline will be $3.99 a gallon for unleaded 88 and $3.49 for E85 through the 4th of July, effective immediately.

There are a few things to keep in mind when you are traveling this Independence weekend. Not all 650+ Sheetz locations will be offering this type of gasoline and not all vehicles are compatible. So what's the difference between Unleaded 88 and E85?

Difference Between Unleaded 88 And E85 Gasoline

Unleaded 88 is for model year vehicles 2001 and newer, as well as light-duty trucks, SUVs, and flex-fuel vehicles.

E85 is made for flexible fuel vehicles and shouldn't be used in standard vehicles. Check your owner's manual to see if you can use it.

Flex-fuel is usually around 80 cents a gallon cheaper with few emissions, so it's better for the environment. But keep in mind that you'll get about 6 to 7 miles per gallon less with flex fuel as compared to "regular" gasoline.

With savings of around a dollar a gallon, it may be worth taking a trip to a Pennsylvania Sheetz from the Southern Tier...especially the Clarks Summit location because you can stop at Krispy Kreme on your way back to town.

LOOK: See how much gasoline cost the year you started driving

To find out more about how has the price of gas changed throughout the years, Stacker ran the numbers on the cost of a gallon of gasoline for each of the last 84 years. Using data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (released in April 2020), we analyzed the average price for a gallon of unleaded regular gasoline from 1976 to 2020 along with the Consumer Price Index (CPI) for unleaded regular gasoline from 1937 to 1976, including the absolute and inflation-adjusted prices for each year.

Read on to explore the cost of gas over time and rediscover just how much a gallon was when you first started driving.
