Back to school backpacks are being prepared for students in need in at least a couple school districts in Broome County.

Backpacks and supplies are being distributed August 25 and 27 to hundreds of young people in the City of Binghamton.

The City is partnering with the non-profit group “CARES” (“Community Advocates Restoring Educational Standards) to hand out 750 packs full of school supplies.   

Backpacks will be distributed on a first-come basis Tuesday, August 25 from 10 to noon at Theodore Roosevelt Elementary School, the Lee Barta Community Center, Saratoga Apartments and East Middle School.  The supplies will be handed out Thursday, August 27 from 10 to noon at Horace Mann, Woodrow Wilson and Benjamin Franklin Elementary Schools.  

Meanwhile, Johnson City Police, the Walmart in Johnson City and the Johnson City School District are collecting school supplies and monetary donations for students.

Donations can be dropped off in the lobby of the Johnson City Police Department at 31 Avenue C between 8 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. through September 10. 

Officials say high school students need things like three-ring binders, college rule paper, highlighters and sticky-notes. 

Donations will be distributed by the school district as needed.
