Police Seek Fake Cop Warning Drivers About “Travel Ban”

Investigators are trying to track down a person who reportedly has been stopping motorists to advise them of a non-existent ban on travel.

According to New York State Police, Oneonta-based troopers are looking into two cases where someone apparently has been impersonating a law enforcement officer in Otsego County.

Both incidents late last month involved a person pretending to be an officer pulling over drivers.

The "fake cop" is said to have asked the motorists about the purpose of their travel. The drivers were warned they would be fined for violating a purported travel ban if they were caught on the road again.

In one case, the imposter reportedly wrote down vehicle registration information. In the second incident, the person claimed to be a state trooper and was wearing a light grey, long-sleeved button down shirt.

Police did not indicate where the incidents occurred.
