Several people were left homeless after a fast-moving fire raced through an apartment house on Endicott's North Side.

Village fire chief Joseph Griswold said the blaze in a three-story building behind 208 North Roosevelt Avenue was reported by a neighbor at 4:42 a.m. Monday.

Griswold said one person was transported from the scene to a hospital for treatment of what were believed to be minor injuries. He said a man apparently sustained some cuts from glass when he jumped from a second-floor apartment.

The fire chief said a woman was pulled from a first-floor unit of the burning building. She was not hurt.

Griswold said no injuries were reported among the firefighters who battled the two-alarm blaze.

Endicott fire units were assisted by firefighters from Endwell, Vestal, West Corners Union Center and West Endicott.

Griswold said the location of the burning building behind another large house made access "very difficult."

The fire chief said there appeared to have been six apartments in the building but he did not immediately know how many units were occupied at the time of the blaze.

Griswold said it appeared the fire originated around the rear area of the second floor, possibly on or under a deck.

Endicott Police Chief Patrick Garey said detectives were working with fire investigators in the effort to determine a cause.
