The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory from 10 a.m. (February 20) to 7 a.m. (February 21) for all of the Twin Tiers, Central New York and stretching north past Syracuse, west toward the western Southern Tier and south through Central Pennsylvania.

The National Weather Service in Binghamton says total snow accumulations of up to two inches and ice accumulations of up to one tenth of an inch are expected.

Forecasters predict snow to move in from midday onward. The statement from the weather service says snow will change to sleet and freezing rain in the evening then continue into the overnight before changing to rain late.

Motorists are being told to plan on slippery road conditions. The hazardous conditions could impact the evening commute.

In anticipation of the mixed precipitation impacting roads, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation and PA Turnpike are implementing phased restrictions on some roads.  Starting at noon, empty, straight CDL-weighted trucks, double trailers, tractors hauling empty trailers, any trailers pulled by passenger vehicles, motorcycles pickup trucks or sport utility vehicles as well as all motorcycles and all recreational vehicles are prohibited on several roads including Interstate 81 from Maryland to New York State, I83, I84 and the Pennsylvania Turnpike, including the Northeast extension.

45 mile per hour speed restrictions may also be place on roads with those vehicle restrictions if necessary,

A Winter Weather Advisory means that periods of snow, sleet or freezing rain will cause travel difficulties. Expect slippery roads and limited visibilities, and use caution while driving.
