Gary Kurz, who had operated the restaurant for several decades, listed the business and related properties for sale about a year ago. At the time, he told WNBF News he still loved the restaurant and its customers but "I want to retire."

Dozens of people posted messages of support for Kurz and his wife on the Silo Restaurant's Facebook page.

Many expressed dismay at the destructive blaze while recalling with fondness many special occasions they had celebrated at the Silo.

"We are devastated to hear of the fire! So many memories, wonderful owner, delightful staff and such delicious food," one Facebook user commented. "It’s a tremendous loss to the entire community. My deepest condolences to the Kurz family and the Silo staff. You made so many of your customers feel like family. I hope you will rebuild."

On the WNBF News Radio Facebook post reporting the fire, many listeners did likewise, sharing memories and showing support for the family.

One listener noting, "So saddened to hear this! The Silo has always been my favorite place to go for an outstanding meal. The Greek tenderloin is hands down the Bomb! Everything about this place was enjoyable."

Another stating, "First place I had went out to dine with my husband's family and meet everyone this was a great place".

The business originally was called "Ye Old Silo Restaurant" when it was opened in 1967. The place reopened following a reconstruction project after a fire caused heavy damage in May 1985.
