State Troopers wearing hard hats and reflective vests like the transportation crews sharing work zones with them have written dozens of tickets for motorists violating everything from failing to move over to using their mobile devices.  The latest operation was conducted October 29 in the Ithaca area.

New York State Police in “Troops” throughout the state, beginning this past spring, have been setting up alongside the road crews, wearing D.O.T. safety gear to look for speeders and other violators in work areas.

The initiative on Route 13 between Lansing and Ithaca produced a dozen tickets for no seatbelt, 4 cell phone violations, various vehicle violations, a number of people driving without a license and even one motorist who was driving with earphones in both ears. A total of 28 tickets were issued.

Aside from catching violators, State Police say the effort has been successful in just making drivers more aware and getting them to comply with traffic and safety laws.
